Oshawa Community Park
O zi însorită şi caldă. Ne-am hotărât să vizităm acest park aflat pe malul lacului Ontario în Oshawa, oraş situat la 30km est de Pickering cu aproximativ 150.000 de locuitori. Mai multe detalii aici. Am descoperit în parc un mic muzeu şi două case memoriale. Casele erau închise dar muzeul l-am vizitat. A fost interesant: am aflat câteva informaţii despre istoria zonei, despre sclavii care erau aduşi din SUA in Canada şi despre abolirea sclaviei in Ontario (numit Upper Canada la vremea aceea).
În altă ordine de idei, eu vin în Oshawa în fiecare după amiază pentru cursul de AutoCAD. Aşa că în ultima vreme am început să cunosc oraşul mai bine. Azi am vizitat şi un magazin numit Tribal Voices. Sunt patru astfel de magazine in Ontario: unul aici, unul în Port Perry (pe care îl ştim de mai multă vreme), unul în Peterborough şi unul în Kingston. Patronul este de origine Indoneziană şi importă sculpturi în lemn de esenţă rară făcute în ţările din zona respectivă. Cele mai frumoase mi se par cele facute în insula Bali. Lemnul cu pricina are un miros plăcut care umple magazinul. Întotdeauna când mergem la Port Perry vizităm şi Tribal Voices. În magazin se gasesc şi bijuterii iar Ileana îşi mai cumpără câte ceva uneori. Preţurile sunt rezonabile având în vedere calitatea produselor.
A nice sunny day. We decided to visit this park located on Oshawa Lakeshore, 30km East of Pickering. We discovered a small museum inside the park composed of three old houses that once belonged to some important people in the area. Only one house was open for visiting. It was interesting. We found out details about slavery, slavery abolition in Upper Canada and the role played by the Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe in this abolition.
I’m going now every day to Oshawa for the AutoCAD course and I begun to be accustomed with the city. Today we visited The Tribal Voices store. There are four stores like this in Ontario: one here, one in Peterborough, one in Port Perry and one in Kingston. The owner is from Indonesia and you can find here teak sculpture, semi-precious silver jewellery, teak furniture, and various home accessories hand crafted in Indonesia. A fine smell of teak wood is filling the store. We knew about the store in Port Perry for a while and we are visiting it every time we go there. Prices are reasonable and Ileana likes to shop for jewellery sometimes.

Petticoat Creek Park

Cea mai caldă zi de până acum. Am ieşit în Petticoat Creek Park aflat foarte aproape de noi (6km), în Pickering. Parcul se gaseste pe malul lacului Ontario dar din cauza falezei foarte înalte accesul la plajă nu este posibil decât în zona unde se varsă Petticoat Creek în Ontario. De regulă mergem pe marginea falezei care oferă o privelişte superbă asupra lacului şi centralei atomice. Pe timpul verii este deschis un ştrand - nu pe malul lacului ci într-o piscină de mari dimensiuni. Pe marginea piscinei se gasesc 8 salvamari iar în mijlocul ei încă doi. Interesant este ca apa nu trece de 1.80 m în mijlocul piscinei însă 80% din piscină nu are adâncimea mai mare de 1m. Cu toate astea părinţii trebuie să intre împreună cu copii în apă şi să îi aibă la o lungime de braţ distantă. În momentul în care distanţa este mai mare imediat vine un salvamar la tine şi îţi atrage atenţia. Am observat şi în alte locuri în Nord America aceeaşi grija să nu se inece lumea. În zona Los Angelesului la fiecare 150 de m este câte un turn cu salvamar prezent acolo de la 9am la 6pm. Şi plaja Los Angeles-ului este foarte lungă... Sunt foarte puţine locuri unde poţi să te scalzi nesupravegheat. În momentul în care te-ai depărtat la mai mult de 100m imediat inoată un salvamar după tine şi te scoate afară. În Canada există multe locuri fără salvamar şi acolo sunt afişe mari care te anunţă că eşti pe propria răspundere. Din păcate apa este mai rece în lacurile din Canada. În lunile iulie - august se poate face baie dar temperatura apei nu este mai mare de 20-22°Celsius. Cei care doresc să inoate mai mult sau să facă windsurfing au nevoie de costum de neopren. Intenţionez să-mi iau şi eu unul. Cel mai grozav este să inoţi în lacul Huron la Georgian Bay. Apa este foarte curată, transparentă, se vede fundul apei ca într-o piscina. Tot în lacul Huron dar la Tobermory fundul apei este de calcar şi apa are o culoare albastră - sidefie. Am mai văzut aşa ceva numai la Grota Azzura lângă insula Capri. Din păcate, Tobermory se află destul de departe de noi (4-5 ore de mers cu maşina). Şi acum câteva poze şi clipuri de la Petticoat Creek.
This is the warmest day until now. We got out to Petticoat Creek Park located very close to our house, in Pickering (6km). The Park is on the Ontario lakeshore but because of the high cliff beach access is available only at the Petticoat Creek emptying into the Ontario Lake. Usually we walk on the edge of the cliff, the trail here offering a beautiful view over the lake. During the summer season a public pool is open. The pool has mostly shallow water but still there are about 8 to 10 lifeguards on duty at all times. Every half hour there are public announcements safety issues. Children have to be within one arm distance from the parent. The moment the distance become bigger a lifeguard will come to you. I noticed also in other places in Nord America the same care to prevent drowning accidents. In Los Angeles there are lifeguards on duty every 150m. And they have a long beach… There are very few places where you can swim without surveillance. You’re not allowed to swim further than 100m. Immediately somebody will swim after you. In Canada there are more places where you can swim without supervision. There are big signs warning you about the lifeguard’s unavailability and that you’re on your own. Unfortunately, lake water in Canada is cold. In July-August months the water temperature doesn’t go over 22°C. Those who want to go swimming or windsurfing needs a wet suit. I plan to buy one myself. The best place to swim is Georgian Bay (Lake Huron). Water is clear and in some places, like Tobermory has a nice blue color because of the limestone bottom. I have seen the same color only at Grota Azzura (Capri Island). Unfortunately, Tobermory is at 4-5 hours driving distance. And now a few photos and video clips.

Tommy Thompson Park

Tommy Thompson Park este o peninsula artificială a cărei construcţie s-a început la sfârşitul anilor 50. Are o lungime de 5 km şi este construită din resturi de la demolări şi de la construcţii. Prima dată am nimerit întâmplător aici - în duminica Floriilor eram în căutarea unei zone înverzite pe unde n-am mai fost. A doua oara a fost de Paşte când am venit cu bibicletele pentru a putea cerceta o zonă mai mare. Am descoperit un parc foarte interesant, cu castori, coioţi şi foarte multe păsări. Colonii de cormorani, egrete, pescaruşi, gâşte, raţe, lebede şi multe altele pe care nu le cunosc. Priveliştea este minunată, peninsula întinzâdu-se paralel cu Downtown Toronto. Tommy Thompson Park is an artificial peninsula. Its construction begun in the late 50’s. It’s 5km long and it’s built on leftovers from demolitions and constructions in Toronto. First time, last week (The Flowers Sunday – Christian Orthodox holiday), we got here by chance. We were looking for another green area to discover. Next week we got here with the bicycles in order to cover the whole peninsula. We discovered a very interesting park with beavers, coyotes and a lot of birds. Gulls, herons, cormorants, geese, ducks, swans and a lot of other birds I don’t know the name. The view is outstanding, the peninsula is parallel with Downtown Toronto. O vizită la Long Point şi Simcoe

Cu ocazia Paştelui Catolic avem liber de joi până marţi (long week-end). Azi am hotarât să mergem la Long Point, o peninsulă ce pătrunde 5 km în lacul Erie. În general se vine aici pentru pescuit şi plajă dar acum nu este sezon. Ca să ajungem aici trebuie să trecem prin Toronto şi Hamilton. De la noi din Pickering sunt 225 km. Ne-am abătut un pic de la drum ca să mâncăm în orăşelul Simcoe aflat la 40 km de Long Point.
Being Easter long weekend we decided to visit Long Point, a peninsula protruding Lake Erie for 5km. Usually, people come here for fishing and sun bathing but today is out of season. To get here we have to cross Toronto and Hamilton. From Pickering there are 225km. But we had a little detour to eat in Simcoe, a city located 40km West of Long Point

La Niagara şi Niagara-On-The-Lake

Ne-am hotărât să facem o vizită la Cascada Niagara. Pe drum ne-am oprit să mâncăm în Niagara-On-The-Lake, un orăşel turistic aflat la vărsarea Niagarei în lacul Ontario. O zi cu soare dar soare cu dinţi... În ciuda temperaturilor destul de scăzute (îngheţ noaptea) câţiva ghiocei îşi făcuseră apariţia.
We decided to visit Niagara Falls today. On the way we stopped to eat in Niagara-On-The-Lake, a touristic town located at the emptying of Niagara River into Lake Ontario. A sunny day but cold... Despite the freezing temperatures during the night, a few snow bells showed up.
